About a year ago I overhauled my lifestyle completely. After stomach pains and other issues related to my autoimmune disease I realized that I have gluten, dairy, and soy intolerances. Now, I am very conscious about what I put in my body and am careful to limit my sugar and exercise often. One thing I realized during this health journey is that even some of the “healthy” foods out there can cause a pesky little thing called heartburn. Here are four healthy foods that cause heartburn.
1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are full of wonderful nutrients, one of which is lycopene. Lycopene is a very powerful antioxidant that studies have shown may help fight breast, prostate, and uterine cancer. Lycopene also is also thought to be great for your vision and may help prevent macular degeneration. Despite these wonderful health benefits, the acidity in tomatoes can trigger heartburn.
2. Dark Chocolate
I know, I know…this is supposed to be the one that is good for you! Despite having antioxidants and the potential to boost serotonin, dark chocolate also has caffeine which is one of the leading causes of heartburn. It’s better than milk chocolate, but neither one are good on the heartburn front.
3. Citrus
I love a great orange or clementine as an afternoon snack. I also love them on road trips because they are easy to carry with me and peel on the way. Despite their great vitamin C content, the acidity of the citrus makes it a prime cause of heartburn.
4. Coffee
As much as it pains me to say, coffee is a major cause of the burn because of the acidity and the caffeine. Switching to decaf may help, but probably won’t completely eliminate the problem.
So what do you do if you still want to continue eating these healthy foods for their health benefits or you just can’t part with their yumminess? I started carrying around Sugar-Free TUMS* for occasional heartburn and I like that it goes to work in seconds.
I go with Sugar-Free TUMS because TUMS is the number one pharmacist recommended antacid brand and I can get fast heartburn relief without the added sugar.
You can find Sugar-Free TUMS at Target, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, and Amazon.
I picked mine up in the antacid aisle at CVS, but I take my TUMS with me wherever I go.
