3 Simple Food Swaps for Traveling

3 Simple Food Swaps for Traveling

I am in the middle of a two week long business trip, which is a little bit unusual but not too out of the ordinary.  Sometimes it is difficult to maintain my healthy eating while I am constantly on the move and eating at restaurants.  Over the years, I have learned a few simple food swaps that can save you hundreds of calories a day without feeling like you are depriving yourself.

1. Drink Water

This is not new information by any stretch, but when I am on the road this is my number one rule! Even one soda or alcoholic beverage at a meal can add 200-300 calories.  (Don't even try me with that diet soda nonsense, those chemicals should never go in your body. End of story.) Water is so restorative to your body and especially to your skin. Water is imperative when your body is under the stress of traveling.  When I head out for work travel, I just know that my only liquid options for the duration of the trip are coffee and water.

2. Sauce And Dressing On The Side

I am so guilty of ordering an extra side of ranch dressing for dipping those less than flavorful restaurant meals.  One of the best ways to cut back is to get all of your sauces and dressings on the side. You can still flavor your meal with the sauce but you can control the amount that is placed on your food. Most of the sauces are highly concentrated in salt and sugar so it will make a noticeable difference if you use less.

3. You NEVER Want Fries With That….

When traveling sometimes fast food is inevitable, but you can really save some calories with your side dish.  You are probably already eating a less than optimal meal so make sure you aren't making matters worse with something fried as your side dish.  Most places offer a fruit or veggie options or both.  I have made comparison chart below so you can see the major difference for yourself!

In the end, everything in moderation is key! When I am traveling I already miss my home and my own cooking so I don't want to hate my meal every time I eat either…
